Orman's 3 Trips of 20
This is one
of the most profound exercises that I have ever done. I poo-pooed
actually DOING it the first time I heard it and just made the lists.
Then one day
I actually did it.
WHAM!
BOOM! was I in for a surprise.
So trust me-
actually DO this exercise.
We
are going to go through your house three times.

Trip #1 |
Find
20 things that are absolutely useless. Make a list of these items.
Broken pens, melted lipstick, 4month old newspapers, one shoe string,
the shoes the dog ate, etc.
Throw
those things out - NOW

Trip #2 |
Find
20 things that are perfectly good but you don't use. Make a list
of these items. For example: the sweater that was too big or too
small or the wrong color that still has its price tag on it from
two years ago, the perfume/cologne your ex bought you which you
can't stand, the king size sheets for the queen sized bed, the books
which you will never read, but a good friend dropped off one day
along with 5 others, etc.
Give them away.
Do not put them in a bag to sell in a garage sale or
ebay. We don't want to create more clutter, more stacks.
We are purging! Instead - Put them in the front seat of your car
to give them to someone who wants and needs them

Trip #3 |
Find
20 things that, if you had a fire, you would save. Make a list of
these items.
These
are the things that are most valuable to you.
What
surprises you when you actually do trip #3?

Review |
Sit
down with the lists and take a look at the things you listed and
what you hold dear.
Everything
you own falls somewhere between the trash can and being the most
valuable thing in your life. You won't look at things in the store
the same way again. You might start asking yourself which list will
this item end up on.
Further
questions:
How many of
the things on those lists were impulse buys? How many of those things
have been taking up storage? How many of those things do you really
want?.
